nak jemput ke tak?

Amalina of Happily Ever After posted this today and I remember posting it here before... and was freaked when I realized it was on the same freaking date, only last year! Hahahahaha freaky or what.

Oh, and the Malay version is cute nak mampos, please. I was so tickled eh! Probably because I imagined the "Nak jemput ke tak?" being said in a makcik-makcik tengah panic voice. Hahaha tak perlu seh :p

Anyway, since we're on the topic of guestlist - we've actually finalized our guestlist for our dinner reception and tinggal tunggu our parents be done with theirs for the afternoon reception. Quite worried that they'll go out of control LMFAO-style so I'm kind of mentally preparing and bracing myself supaya tak terkejut berok sangat ah kalau tiba tiba guestlist bertambah panjang macam the Nile freaking River. At most kalau terkejut pun, terkejut katak je lah eh.

Actually kan, truth be told, I'm not really thaaattttttttt bothered about an increased guestlist tau - what I'm more bothered about is... having to see people I do not want to see at my wedding reception.

Ok, make that two specific people.

I know I'll be very menyampah and meluat and macam nak buat my sanggul become a piece of deadly weapon if I see them at my wedding because it is goddamn shameless to be mingling and feasting at a reception that celebrates me and my new life after what they did and said to me on that one fateful night. But my girlfriends and my mat have told me to keep calm and choose my battles and this is one battle... I do not want to fight. I kasih and cinta my parents too much and a curt smile and a roll of the eye is far better than a bloody burning bridge causing trouble at my wedding reception... right?

So... nak jemput ke tak? Actually tak nak ah but bo pian ma.

to veil or to turband

Remember an entry last year when I was fretting over what hairdo to have for my engagement and mentioned that my sister gave me a fab idea which I really liked but decided not to use because it might be too young and too casual for a formal engagement?

It suddenly struck me that I can use that idea of hers for my outdoor photoshoot instead!!!

And since I haven't mentioned what exactly my sister's idea for my engagement hairdo was - it's actually this pretty little thing called turband! Ok lah, this bendealah turband has been around for a few years already lah but it's a classic piece that will tahan for decades okay! Plus I really like the idea of wearing a turband for my outdoor photoshoot!!!

I quite like the lace ones but nanti macam pakai lace undies kat kepala pulak eh HAHA

***************

Ok, I am ridiculously obsessed with this idea now!!!!!

(Eh even Justin Bieber digs the look ok ha ha ha ha ha.)

And I know just the person to go to for turbands in Singapore!!! Gypsied!!! Wooooohoo! But of course there's a huge collection on Etsy as well lah, tinggal search for "turband" and I'll have thousands of turband possibilities in my hands.

I'm not sure if turbands work for full-figured women with round faces, though. Even if I lose weight in time for the photoshoot, I'll still have my round-shaped muka cheeseburger to worry about. Hmmm. Maybe I'll do a trial at home and see how it looks on me - if it makes me look like a lemang then I'll probably just settle for a simple hair bow or a single flower by the side of my head instead.

EH MACAM MANA NI?! I got one kepala only, which one to pakai ni?!?!?!

Should I pakai the veil and bow during the first half of the photoshoot pastu tukar to turband during the second half??? Should I wear the veil for photoshoot and wear turband for something else like Raya visiting instead??? (Oh ho ho I can just hear the makcik pakcik gripe with a "ishhh pakai tudung, tak nak" haha) Or should I make my mat wear the veil whereas I wear the turband instead???!!! Hahahahaha.

OH, OR SHOULD I COMBINE BOTH

no henna, no go?

Whyyyyyyyyyy am I still so indecisive on bridal henna ni?!

This internal debate on bridal henna has been raging within me since the start of mankind (Ok ah, bedek ah, I only started thinking about bridal henna a year ago hahaha) but until now masih tak boleh buat decision.

I've blogged before about how I'm neutral about bridal henna (here) and it really is dependent on whether our parents want me to wear the bridal henna. When I asked my supermother who is also the mother of all rilek jek, she gave me one of her template replies "Suka hati kau lah Na...

She didn't even bat an eyelid when I asked "Abeh kalau ada tetamu tanya Ibu kenapa pengantin tak pakai inai, Ibu cakap ape?"! Her reply steady je: "Biarlah orang nak cakap ape, kalau dorang tanya Ibu, Ibu jawab je lah budak budak sekarang kan ada citarasa sendiri..."

Haiiiii sejuk hati ni bila dengar jawapan macam tu, I love you till the end of time lah supermother!

Actually the person we expected resistance from is my mat's mother since she's usually more inclined towards retaining tradition (she told us it is not advisable to "cut corners" when it comes to customs bila kita tanya for her opinion on scrapping sireh dara and bunga pahar) but she was surprisingly chill about it and said that it is up to me to decide whether I want to wear inai for our wedding. She did say that my mat is to not wear inai, though, which is more than fine with us since we didn't want him to wear any in the first place! Yay! Can I just say that I am really starting to love his supermother also?! Hehe.

I was pretty set on not wearing bridal henna sometime back and was quite ready to cancel my appointment with Syraskins but wanted to get opinions from my girlfriends first... but I think that turned out to be the salah step haha because it seems like everytime I ask a girlfriend, the reply will come in a form of a shrieky "Of course you must wear inai! If you don't wear inai macam bukan pengantin!"

Oh. Got such thing one ah??? Hahahahaha. Ok lah, I have to admit that I actually do understand where my girlfriends are coming from - this bridal henna tradition is so deeply ingrained in our Malay society, that macam takde "kick" if the bride tak pakai inai. But it was this acknowledgement yang brought me back to this state of undecisiveness lor! Plus a girlfriend once told me that I can try and get special bridal treatment and/or perks like freebies or discounts or room upgrade if I go to certain places for honeymoon or go for staycation after the wedding because some of the staff I meet along the way will recognize the bridal henna. Bah.

I tried looking through pictures of pengantins who did not wear bridal henna for their wedding and saw a picture of this one pengantin who didn't pakai bridal henna and she looked pretty ok to me...

(Source: Fad Manaf Photography)

Kalau tak pakai inai, kan boleh pakai french manicure!!! Heh heh heh heh heh

Ok dah, dah. Once again macam nak self-service je tampar diri sendiri eh! Tak nak pakai bridal henna sebab kononnya tradition Hindu, pastu nak pakai manicure! Step tak nak ikut tradition Hindu tapi nak terikut-ikut tradition omputeh. Perangai songsang. Asking to kena azan kat telinga lah this one. Haha.

Oh well. Even if I do decide to pakai bridal henna, I'll most probably do away with the intricate designs yang naik sampai lengan, sampai ketiak segala, (or design ikan koi or design dragon as previously suggested by my mamat hahahahaha siak ah ini budak) and opt for simple palm design and finger tips aje. Something like this:

Looks ok kan? Plus if I wash off the henna paste really quickly then the effects won't be as gelap and it will fade out faster, kan? That's how it works, kan? Also Googled for methods to speed up the fading process, and I got this and this. Ok, bookmark!!!

One of the reasons why I'm reluctant to wear henna (besides the whole religious controversy and the fact that I'm not really a fan of henna) is also because of our post-wedding photoshoot scheduled one day after the wedding - I don't want to have henna on my hands bila ambik gambar!!! Tried negotiating with my mat to postpone the photoshoot until the henna fades off but he's resistant to the idea. So menyampah when he starts his perangai rebel without a cause tu. Pfft. One option we have is to have a pre-wedding photoshoot... which is something that both of us are trying very, very hard to avoid. Personal preference, really, don't mind us.

I tried to Google the Islamic stand on bridal henna (in a bid to try and sway my decision) but I keep reading different views sampai pening sampai mabuk sampai nak muntah jadi nya. Ada say haram, ada say tak haram! How! How to decide like that! Cock up! Fed up! Give up! (Haha yes, well, obviously for some things it's best to refer to experts and not Google)

Giving myself until the end of the month to decide this. Kalau tak boleh decide jugak nanti aku half half kan je lah eh. Right hand pakai inai, left hand don't pakai inai. Kalau tetamu tanya, cakap je trend baru, budak budak sekarang kan ada citarasa sendiri. (Hahahahaha what what, this one my mother say one ok!)

SCHEME

Saaaaayang the liaison person for our venue sooo much for being such a sweetheart!

When we first asked Dzul for our first site visit, we requested for it to be scheduled on a Sunday (which was his non-working day) because of our circumstances at that time and he graciously allowed an exception for us to do so. Then baru baru ni when we wanted to go down for a second site visit, we contacted him to ask whether we could go down to the venue last Deepavali break - we were trying our luck, really, it was a public holiday seh - we actually expected him to tell us to re-schedule and would've applied for half day leave or head down after work. But he gave us a quick OK and so off we went to our wedding venue for the second time!

Ok.  The reason why we wanted to do a second site visit was because memories of our wedding venue were pretty sketchy and we couldn't really remember the colours of the venue itself, which hampered our decision on our wedding colour scheme. You see, initially we sort of had an idea on what colours we wanted for our wedding decor but I told my mat to put a hold to it first because I was feeling 50/50 as to whether our initial colour scheme will match the colours of our venue.

Lo and behold, our second site visit proved to be really useful because after we took pictures and refreshed our memories on the venue size and colours - BAM! - we realized that our initial colour scheme did not really match the venue! Plus, the venue is much bigger than I remembered it to be!

I guess it's true what some of our friends have said about our venue - that our decor might tenggelam or look bare because of the size of our venue. Ini part dah kena accept the fact that we can't have our cake and eat it too - since we want a huge spacious venue, we'll have to accept this possibility of our venue looking quite bare even after dah kena decorated cantik cantik, ye tak?!

(Remember to take note of the size and colours of your venue the first time you visit it, especially if it's somewhere that is not as accessible as void decks or neighbourhood multi-purpose halls ok guys. It'll help with layout and colour scheme planning! Take pictures if possible, if not, ask for pictures from the venue's liaison person for reference. We didn't do this the first time we went down to our chosen venue, which is why we had to schedule this second trip after we couldn't visualize solely based on memory.

Now that I'm saying this, it's actually quite silly because it sounds like something very basic but my mamat and I were so taken in by how it was the best possible venue choice for us and it was a whirlwind process of understanding the terms and conditions and coming up with possible various layouts on the spot that it totally slipped our minds.)

Went back to our drawing board after the second site visit and our planning became so much more easier and clearer because we've decided to incorporate the colour of the large windows of our venue as one of the main colours for our colour scheme! The downside is that we're limited to the colours that can match the colours of the venue windows, but the upside is that we've become much more focused on what colours to use and play around with for our decor colour scheme.

Very, very, very glad we went down to the venue again! Might also go down to see the venue when there is a wedding in full swing as suggested by another one of our unofficial wedding advisors Sham (Thanks for all your help and input so far, bro! Heehee), but for now the wedding pictures that Dzul has given us and the pictures we've seen of weddings held at the same venue on Facebook is sufficient for us to roughly visualize how a wedding will look like at our chosen venue.

The next thing to do relating to our wedding colour scheme is to send it for my future mother-in-law's approval! Ala ala hantar proposal to management for approval gitu! Egads!

Akak iz very seram and very sejuk because unlike my own chill-lek semua-ok-boleh-go-lantak-kau-lah-budak mother, my future mother-in-law has... specific things that she likes or prefers.

Jeng jeng jenggggggg.

Bila dengar gitu, rasa macam gerun kan! Turun Battlestar Galactica rollercoaster kat USS tak pakai seatbelts pun tak gerun macam gini seh.

Ok that made her sound very the bekas bridezilla bakal mertua buas hahahahaha but hep heppppp, don't get me wrong eh! She's actually very easy to get along with (at least from my observation and interaction with her so far, Alhamdullilah), she's very learned and tertib and very pentingkan adab - senang cakap she's made up of a good heart, good manners and all the good stuff.

My only concern as of now is the fact that her taste is very different from mine.

I know some people complain their parents or future parents-in-law suka design or nak benda yang orbit orbit but my issue is of a different kind - I have no complains about my future mother-in-law's taste in decor and stuff because her taste is, in actual fact, top of the notch! She loves and appreciates all things classic and sophisticated and romantic and I'm grateful to have such a fabulously modern future mother-in-law.

Unfortunately, it is because her taste is very classic and sophisticated and romantic, there is an issue - my taste is far from classic and sophisticated and romantic.

Aku kalau boleh nak bentang rainbow carpet, gantung party streamers all over the ceiling and walls and set up colourful waterslides segala right smack in the middle of our reception seh kalau boleh. Hahahahaha. Senang cakap, I prefer things to be loud and bright and fresh and fun! Y'know? (This explains the choice of colours for my engagement, really. Haha)

And anak dia sendiri tak romantic langsung! Ape kebenda decor kahwin nak feeling feeling romantic?! To have a romantic setting for our wedding will not reflective of us as couple and we will only be lying to ourselves *cough drama cough auta cough*

I guess the good thing is both my mat and I have identified this possible clash earlier on, which is why we decided to arrange a discussion with his parents (or specifically, his mother) sometime next month - at least we can get to a persefahaman before we meet the boys from Kasai Sayang. Kalau tak kesian dorang, headache the pengantin want that and this but the future parents-in-law don't agree! I pun tak nak my future mother-in-law to get a rude shock when she masuk the wedding venue and suddenly find a circus for her majlis haha.

We're trying to strike a balance between my taste and his mother's taste in particular, although I've already mentally prepared myself for the possibility that I might even end up with a subdued wedding decor, siap with pale colours to suit a classy romantic setting (bye bye bright colours ku sayang..........)

Haiiiii, belum masuk gelanggang dah kena give up satu benda hahahahaha kalau ada cita cita nak jadi freedom fighter, dah boleh lupakan saje seh ni hahaha

Going for the discussion with a positive mind and positive heart, though! Because positive mind + positive heart = positive results. (Betul tak bedek! Cuba try. Dah cuba lepas tu try) Cannottttt wait for all the menyebok sebok kerja things to be settled latest by mid December so I can start working on my moodboards and proposal for presentation to my future mother-in-law before the year ends. Just for kicks, I'm going to do two moodboards - one that incorporates elements that I like and I think she might like and approve and another one that has all the elements that I like and will include if I didn't have to consider someone else's opinions and tastes for my presentation to her as well!

Mana lah tau......................................................

CHANGE

I previously mentioned that I'll blog about the change in one of our wedding service providers.

Jeng. Jeng. Jeng.

Hahaha ok lah tak perlu nak dramalah, let's keep it simple and keep it quick ok - the service provider that we've decided to change isssss...

... our service provider for entertainment.

That's right. Entertainment. Which is supposed to be - that's right - Sri Mahligai.

Before you all pikir bukan-bukan, let me explain what happened and why we've decided to change Sri Mahligai to something else.

It all started at Sham and Aisyah's wedding earlier this month.

(Yes, guys. Ni semua korang punya pasal ok!!! Hahahahaha.)

My future parents-in-law, who went to Sham and Aisyah's afternoon reception, were very impressed by the wedding emcee that the latter engaged for their reception. They really liked his eloquence and his steadiness in addressing a wedding crowd, and they were especially pleased with his mindfulness towards prayer timings and informing guests on the location of prayer rooms.

Even my mat and the rest of his friends thought the wedding emcee in question was a good speaker and handled the wedding proceedings well. But part yang paling penting that really appealed to them was: He did not make merepek lame jokes or inappropriate comments like some other wedding emcees that we've seen and heard at other weddings! Sejuk~~~ jantung aku dengar (a'ah dia ada telinga, boleh eavesdrop.)

It can be really painful to look and listen at some wedding emcees ok! Very cringeworthy. Everytime a wedding emcee cracks a joke yang inappropriate or tak kelakar - on a booming microphone, no less - I never know whether to force a laugh or cry in shame or yelp in extreme pain. Kadang kadang macam nak tolong dorang dig a hole for them to hide in pun ada.

My mat and I were talking about Sham and Aisyah's wedding when we started considering the idea of dropping Sri Mahligai and engaging the said wedding emcee instead. Our original idea was to get Sri Mahligai to help make general announcements for the reception (Sri Mahligai can make general announcements for receptions, it's stated somewhere on their website) but after talking it through, the idea of having an actual dedicated wedding emcee seemed to be more appealing.

Plus, his parents were really super duper keen on this dude, and my parents were super duper cool with the idea so after a quick discussion listing the pros and cons, we decided to take the plunge and engage Zan Sofiyan from Medialite as our wedding deejay/emcee!

(Without a goddamn karaoke set for all the mabuk microphone hantus to abuse! Woohoo! Very pleased that we didn't have to go to any perang dunia ke-tiga for this because our parents share our sentiments! Ok fine, my mother would have preferred to include the karaoke set but she's an excellent team player who goes with the majority vote so the motion to not have karaoke set was carried unanimously.

Fuh. Dah macam Annual General Meeting seh, ada motion carried segala. Haha!)

What we considered before making the decision:

(1) Our contract with Sri Mahligai is for a 6-hour gig from 11am to 5pm at the price of $1,600.00. Our initial plan was to have Sri Mahligai play at our lunchreception and then engage a deejay/emcee (someone who will come with own equipment segala) for our dinner reception, which would have cost us an extra $500.00 to $800.00.

(I know some people rope in friends to help emcee dinner receptions but we didn't want to do that right from the start because we wouldn't want any one of our friends, especially a rapat one, to stress over or focus too much on his/her role as an emcee - we want all our friends to be able to enjoy the proceedings in peace and move around as they please.)

The Wedding Lunch + Dinner DJ Package from Medialite, on the other hand, costs $2000.00 for a 10-hour gig from 12pm to 10pm, which fits our lunch and dinner reception schedules perfectly.

This means that:
(a) We don't have to susah payahkan diri to look for another deejay/emcee for our wedding dinner;

(b) We only need to liaise with one service provider, instead of two separate ones;

(c) The cost is more or less the same, with more convenience and better planning for us (instead of Sri Mahligai setting up in the morning then packing up in the afternoon to make way for the dinner emcee to set up, it will only be Medialite setting up the night before, and then packing up after the dinner reception is over. Quick, clean and fuss-free.)

(2) One of the things that we realized from helping or attending our friends' weddings is that having a good wedding deejay or emcee is something that is pretty important - sadly, this is something that is often overlooked by bakal pengantin, including us!

We used to only fuss over bridal and decor and catering, but surprisingly our wedding journey has shown us that having a good wedding deejay or emcee at your wedding makes a huge difference to your wedding reception - a good and trusted wedding deejay or emcee ensures that:
(a) your guests are properly welcomed and entertained and he/she knows when to announce for guests to come up to the dais for phototaking
(You'd think that this is perkara standard that all deejays/emcees will do but ho no no no, my friend, there are idiotic deejays/emcees out there who will stand around and play music with no initiative to usher/direct guests - this happened at my friend's wedding recently wherein the deejay had to be prompted a few times to announce that the pengantins are ready for photo-taking... and even then he didn't get a list of names from the pengantin's family or whatever - he just did a generic announcement over the music which did not even get the guests' attention or get the guests moving, and my friend didn't get to take pictures with a few key groups of friends);

(b) your event timing is taken care of and does not run off course for too far or too long due to unnecessary hegehness; and

(c) ensure that guests get clear directions as to who or where the mak bapak pengantin are, what is going to happen in the next five minutes, explain the proceedings to your guests who are not familiar with Malay wedding proceedings, stuff like that.
(One of the criteria that we had for a wedding emcee was for him or her to be able to speak comfortably in English. My mat told me that Zan Sofiyan's English is pretty lancar so that's a plus point for us!)

The downside to this whole thing is of course the forfeiture of our $100 deposit with Sri Mahligai, but the pros outweighs cons by berkilo-kilo so in the grand scheme of things, forfeiture of $100 is something that we can take. We might have been more reluctant to let go of the deposit if it was $500 or half of the contract price but it's not so... let go of Sri Mahligai, it is!

To think Sri Mahligai was one of the first few items that we booked for our wedding early tahun ni seh. (Don't judge ok, we did not plan to book entertainment that early, until we realized at the point of enquiry that Sri Mahligai was booked up until early 2014. Tak kelakar, geng.)

Both our mothers, my mat and I met Zan Sofiyan last week (our fathers wanted to come along but had other commitments) because he preferred to have parents around so he can get a feel of our family backgrounds and dynamics. The meeting went pretty well, I thought, different from what I expected but it was good nonetheless.

He was tersangatlah chatty hahaha (he's a deejay/presenter, of course he's chatty, geez) and was very serious and religious-centric when it came down to business, sampai at one point he must've have caught the mood of the discussion and he himself said "Ni dah macam marriage counselling eh" hahahahaha ah tau takpe eh bang. Even my future mother-in-law joked at the end of the session: "Rasa macam berbual dengan tok kadi!" Haha!

When my mat and I recapped the whole meeting over the phone that night, my first comment was: "Wah, at the start of the meeting, I ingatkan dia nak kasi khutbah or syarahan agama or something seh." Not that there's anything bad with this, of course! I must say you're better off with someone else if you're looking for a gila-gila wedding emcee though, because Zan Sofiyan is - in the words of my future mother-in-law - someone who is very... beradab. Which is something that both our parents like so it's a good match lor.

(Side note: This dude believes and is forever quoting “The wedding belongs to your parents and the marriage is yours” - a sentiment that I understand and can agree with to a certain extent, but I also feel that this is something that cannot be applied across the board. Judging from our tweet exchanges about this statement, my group of friends are pretty divided about it but we haven't had the time to fully debate the statement... TIME TO CATCH UP OVER DINNER AGAIN, GUYS! New topic to pertikaikan! Hur hur.)

It's a damn shame we can't have both Sri Mahligai and Medialite together at the same time for our reception. I still think Sri Mahligai is one of the best Malay traditional bands in the market and would love to have them perform at our wedding! Unfortunately, we think that $1600 (Sri Mahligai) + $2000 (Whole day emcee services) = $ 3600 for entertainment is a bit too excessive so it's one or the other.

Plus, we also have to bear in mind that having them both onsite would mean we would have to allocate more space for entertainment alone. Mana nak letak pelamin, mana nak letak dessert table, mana nak letak buffet tables, mana nak letak sound system, mana nak letak kerusi meja, mana nak letak kandang untuk letak and ikat kanak kanak budu yang suka lari lari tak tau diam...

We also considered having Sri Mahligai for our lunch reception and then Zan Sofiyan from Medialite for our dinner reception but that idea very cepat kena tanam di ladang gandum because it didn't make sense to top up $1380 for Zan Sofiyan to emcee our dinner reception for a mere 2 and a half hours.

If any of you happen to have the same wedding date as me and memang nak Sri Mahligai, cepat cepat cepat pergi place your deposit before the slot gets snapped up ok! (Note: FYI, Sri Mahligai's rates are no longer $1,600.00, but $1,800.00. Their price hike happened on 1 May this year.)

So I guess this is it... Bye bye Sri Mahligai booking :(

I hope you'll go to another couple who deserves good music and entertainment at their wedding ok! (Nampak sah dah gila, berbual dengan a mother bloody booking hahaha)
